According to Chinese Medicine, Trigeminal Neuralgia is most commonly caused by an invasion of external of Wind and Heat that blocks the flow of Qi and blood in the channels (It can also be a symptom of Liver and Stomach Heat rising upwards, Kidney Yin Deficiency, and some other diagnosis). It is postulated that the insertion of acupuncture needles causes enhanced blood flow to the affected area. With multiple acupuncture treatments, the cumulative effect may actually lead to nerve repair in the case of the demyelinated trigeminal sensory fibers mentioned in the first paragraph.
